Yes, we know autumn doesn't officially start before September 22nd. However, the weather is already mentally preparing us for the new season, so we might as well physically prepare for it too, ahead of time.
Changing of seasons is the ideal time to do a deep-clean and declutter around the house, so we put together an autumn cleaning checklist of specific tasks that will make your home ready for the cooler, cosy months ahead:
1. Kitchen
- Organise pantry and fridge: Discard expired items and organise your pantry for autumn staples like spices, soups and baking supplies.
- Clean oven and stove: Get your kitchen ready for all the baking and holiday cooking by deep-cleaning appliances.
2. Bedrooms
- Change bedding: Swap out summer bedding for heavier, warmer sheets, blankets and comforters.
- Flip or rotate mattresses: Extend the life of your mattress by flipping or rotating it.
- Organise closets: Put away summer clothes and bring out sweaters, coats and boots. Consider donating items you no longer wear.
3. Living areas
- Clean and rotate rugs: Give rugs a good clean to remove dirt and allergens and rotate them to ensure even wear.
- Check and clean fireplace: If you have a fireplace, inspect and clean it before use. Make sure to stock up on firewood too.
4. Heating and HVAC systems
- Change air filters: Replace the air filters in your heating system to ensure good air quality and efficiency.
- Schedule HVAC maintenance: Have your heating system checked and serviced by a professional to ensure it's ready for cooler temperatures.
- Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors: Make sure they are functioning properly, and replace batteries if needed.
5. Outdoor areas
- Trim trees: Trim overhanging branches to prevent potential damage during storms.
- Store outdoor furniture: Store patio furniture, cushions and umbrellas to protect them from the elements.
- Store gardening tools: Store tools and drain hoses.
- Check outdoor lighting: Make sure pathways and entrances are well-lit for the darker evenings.
6. General
- Declutter entryways: Organise shoes, coats and bags to prepare for the bulkier items that come with autumn.
- Wash windows: Give windows a good clean before the colder months when it’s harder to do so.
- Check weather stripping: Inspect doors and windows for drafts and replace weather stripping or caulk as necessary to keep your home warm.
Starting autumn cleaning now, before the weather becomes dreadful, gives you time to tackle the items and areas you'll most use during the autumn season.
