How to Clean Your BBQ Naturally: Eco-Friendly Grill Cleaning Tips

Summer is officially here, and there’s nothing quite like the smell and feeling of a BBQ on a warm evening. But, let's be honest, no one likes to clean it when the fun bit is over. The good news? It doesn’t have to be a faff. With a few simple habits and some sustainable BBQ cleaning know-how, you can keep your grill sparkling, safe and ready for the next feast.

Here’s how to clean your BBQ naturally – no chemicals, no plastic, just good old-fashioned effectiveness.

After every use

1. Burn it off
Once you’re done cooking, shut the lid and turn up the heat for 10-15 minutes. This is one of the easiest, yet unknown by many, BBQ cleaning tips to get rid of leftover food, grease and grime.

2. Scrub while it’s hot
Use a copper scourer, or a half onion on a fork (yes, really), to give it a quick clean. Scrubbing warm grates is the best way to clean a barbecue without hassle.

3. Oil the grates
Rub a little high-heat oil (like rapeseed) on the grates to stop food sticking next time and prevent rust. It’s a small step that makes a big difference in BBQ maintenance.

4. Spray & wipe
Ditch the chemical sprays – try lemon juice, white vinegar or a baking soda paste for a powerful, non-toxic clean. Wipe it down with plastic-free and washable cloths.

Deep clean

If your BBQ is looking a bit too “well-loved,” here’s what your eco-friendly BBQ cleaning routine should look like:

1. Soak the grates
Remove and soak the grates in hot water with a dash of natural dish soap, or try a mix of baking soda and white vinegar – a classic natural BBQ cleaner combo that together creates a fizzy reaction that helps loosen dirt.

2. Scrub away
Grab your trusty Seep copper scourer and work away the built-up carbon. This step keeps your grill in top shape.

3. Empty the grease tray
This one is messy, but important. Empty the tray, wipe it out, and wash with warm, soapy water. No one likes a BBQ fire from old grease.

4. Check the burners (for gas BBQs)
Uneven flames? Clogged holes could be the issue. Use a toothpick or bit of wire to clear them. This is a quick fix that keeps your grill working efficiently.

Keeping your BBQ clean doesn’t have to be a chore, and it definitely doesn’t need to come at the planet’s expense. A few small habits and the right eco-friendly cleaning tools go a long way.
