Despite our best efforts, dust seems to be everywhere. It settles on our furniture, dances in sunbeams, but most concerningly, it hangs around in the air we breathe. In collaboration with Briiv, we've created an action plan to help you tackle the dusty dilemma of how to get dust out of the air.
Why should you care about dust?
Dust isn't just unsightly; it can impact your health and wellbeing. Approximately 7 million people die every year from poor air pollution. That’s more than the population of Denmark! There’s also evidence to show that air pollution can have a detrimental effect on our brain function. Common issues include:
-
Allergies & asthma: Dust mites are a major trigger for allergies and asthma. Reducing dust can significantly alleviate symptoms.
-
Respiratory irritation: Dust particles can irritate your lungs and airways, leading to coughing, sneezing, and general discomfort.
-
Overall air quality: A dusty home simply doesn't feel as fresh or clean. Improving air quality contributes to a more comfortable and inviting living space.
How to get dust out of the air: your action plan
-
Embrace regular cleaning
-
Dust surfaces frequently: Use a damp Eco All-Purpose Bamboo Cloth to trap dust instead of just moving it around.
-
Vacuum regularly: Pay attention to carpets, rugs, and upholstery, as these are dust magnets. Look for a vacuum with a HEPA filter to trap even the tiniest particles.
-
Mop hard floors: After vacuuming, mop hard floors to remove any remaining dust.
-
Upgrade your air filtration
-
Air Purifier: Invest in a good quality air purifier with a HEPA or HEPA-like filter. Place it in your bedroom or living room, where you spend the most time.
-
HVAC Filters: Regularly replace the filters in your heating and cooling system. A clean filter improves airflow and traps dust.
-
Declutter your space
-
Less is more: The more items you have in your home, the more surfaces dust can settle on. Declutter regularly to minimise dust accumulation.
-
Storage solutions: Use storage containers to keep dust-prone items like books, clothes, and knick-knacks organised and protected.
-
Control humidity
-
Dehumidifier: Keep humidity levels in your home below 50% to discourage dust mite growth. Use a dehumidifier in damp areas like bathrooms and basements.
-
Wash bedding regularly
-
Weekly wash: Wash your bedding, including sheets, pillowcases, and blankets, in hot water at least once a week to kill dust mites.
Getting dust out of the air is an ongoing process, but with these tips and the right tools, you can create a cleaner, healthier, and more comfortable home.
