Having a cat is all fun and games until you have to clean after it... 🐈 Cleaning up after a cat can be a challenge, but using natural cat cleaning methods ensures a safe environment for both you and your feline friend.
Here are some effective and natural cat cleaning hacks:
1. Vinegar for litter box cleaning
White vinegar is excellent for neutralising odours and disinfecting the litter box. Empty the litter box and rinse it with hot water. Then fill it with a mixture of 1 part vinegar to 1 part water. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, scrub, rinse and dry before refilling with fresh litter.
2. Baking soda for odour control
Baking soda is a natural deodoriser that can absorb unpleasant smells. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda at the bottom of the litter box before adding litter. You can also sprinkle it on carpets and furniture where your cat might leave odours, letting it sit for 15 minutes before vacuuming.
3. Hydrogen peroxide for stain removal
Hydrogen peroxide is effective at removing stains from carpets and upholstery. Blot up as much of the stain as possible first. Then spray or dab hydrogen peroxide onto the stain, let it sit for 5-10 minutes and blot with a clean cloth. Be sure to test a small, hidden area first, as it can have a mild bleaching effect.
4. Lemon juice for disinfection
Lemon juice is a natural antibacterial that can help with disinfecting surfaces. Mix lemon juice with water in a 1:1 ratio and use it to wipe down surfaces like floors, countertops or the area around the litter box. Avoid using it directly on carpets or fabric as it might bleach them.
5. Coconut oil for cleaning fur and paws
Coconut oil is great for cleaning and conditioning your cat's fur, as well as for cleaning up sticky substances from paws. Rub a small amount of coconut oil between your hands and gently massage it into your cat’s fur or paws. This will also leave their coat soft and shiny.
6. Cornstarch for vomit stains
Cornstarch is excellent for absorbing moisture and lifting stains from fabrics. Sprinkle cornstarch over the vomit stain, let it sit for 10-15 minutes and vacuum it up. Follow up with a vinegar and water spray to fully clean the area.
7. Essential oils (cat-safe) for freshening up
Some essential oils, like lavender and chamomile, are safe for cats and can be used to freshen up your home. Add a few drops to a diffuser or make a spray with water and a few drops of oil to lightly mist the air. Always ensure the oils you use are safe for cats, as many essential oils can be toxic to them.
8. Club soda for urine stains
Club soda helps lift urine stains and neutralise odours. Pour club soda directly onto the urine stain, let it fizz for a few minutes, then blot it up with a clean cloth. Repeat as necessary, then follow up with a vinegar spray for additional deodorising.
9. Diatomaceous earth for flea control
Food-grade diatomaceous earth is a natural flea deterrent. Lightly sprinkle diatomaceous earth on carpets, cat beds, and areas where your cat spends time. Leave it for a few hours, then vacuum it up. It’s safe for cats and can help control fleas without chemicals.
10. Natural air freshener
To keep your home smelling fresh without synthetic air fresheners, place small bowls of activated charcoal, baking soda or dried herbs like lavender in areas prone to odour. These will naturally absorb and neutralise bad smells.
