Bed bugs are not just a nuisance — they can disrupt your sleep and cause itchy, uncomfortable bites. Fortunately, there are proactive steps you can take to prevent these pesky insects from infesting your home.
In partnership with The Fine Bedding Company, we’ve created a guide with 6 effective measures to keep bed bugs away and ensure a peaceful night's sleep.
How to prevent bed bugs at home?
- Regularly inspect your bedding and furniture
Check for any signs of bed bugs, such as tiny blood spots or dark faecal stains, particularly along mattress seams, bed frames and upholstery. -
Use bedding designed for defence
The Fine Bedding Company’s Allergy Defence Collection offers the ultimate 4-in-1 solution, using HeiQ Allergen Tech, which reduces exposure to pollen, dust mite matter and dog and cat allergens.
-
Encase your mattress and box spring
Invest in high-quality mattress protection such as FBC’s Spundown Mattress Protector, washable at a dust mite busting 60ºC. Protective covers create a barrier that trap bed bugs from entering or escaping your mattress.
- Minimise clutter
Clutter provides hiding places for bed bugs, making it harder to detect and eliminate them. Keep your living space tidy, especially in areas where bed bugs are likely to hide, such as closets, under the bed and behind furniture. - Be cautious when travelling
Bed bugs are notorious hitchhikers and can easily infest your home by stowing away in luggage or clothing during travel. To avoid this, carefully inspect hotel rooms and other accommodations for signs of bed bugs before unpacking. Additionally, use luggage racks and avoid placing your belongings directly on upholstered surfaces. Be sure to also vacuum your luggage and belongings after returning from a trip. - Seal cracks and gaps
Bed bugs can enter your home through tiny cracks and gaps in walls, floors and furniture. Seal any cracks or crevices with caulk or sealant to prevent bed bugs from gaining entry and establishing a foothold in your home.
By following these preventative measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of a bed bug infestation and snooze away in peace, uninterrupted.
What if you do find signs of bed bugs?
- Wash and dry bedding, linens and clothing on high heat
Bed bugs cannot survive high temperatures, so washing and drying your bedding, linens and clothing on the hottest setting can kill them and their eggs.
- Freeze affected clothing, bedding and linens
Put your infected goods in a plastic bag and place them in the freezer for at least 3 days. The same way heat kills them, so does extreme cold.
